As much as I'd love to contribute, we're going in the opposite direction. I could justify the expense when it was just CPU usage as that didn't use hardly any more electricity and I was at least competitive. But now things have changed pretty drastically with GPU folding becoming the norm.
After our electric bill reached 4 figures+ ($1250AUD in 3 month period) we took several steps to reduce it. The biggest impact was shutting down folding on GPUs and eliminating higher end GPUs on systems that didn't need them. (I also lost my MegaWorks 510D 5.1 surround, because it was bought in USA and using a power converter that sucked 40w from the wall running 24/7. Now a perfectly good 500w surround sound system is collecting dust in the garage.)
My system still has a HD4850 for occasional games, but all others have 5200 or less. I know my system is crap compared to high end systems now, and it only uses 105-110w at idle and under load for CPU. But when the GPU starts folding or playing games it jumps to 180-220w. Ouch even. I can't imagine how people get by with SLI or Crossfire on high end cards, let alone multiple systems with high end vid cards running under load all the time.
Still think its great that those who can afford it are contributing to a worthwhile cause though. Keep up the good work guys & gals. And go team PCStats!!
